Those with no experience who want to find out more about a career with Ensign:
For those with no experience it is important to realise that the drilling industry is physically demanding, and a high level of physical and mental fitness is required. Someone with a demonstrable background in working in remote localities, or those who are used to extended absences from home may be more competitive than those who have not experienced such conditions.

Additionally, those who are career orientated and have a high level of motivation and personal pride are more likely to succeed in this industry. Ensign employees work with a diverse selection of rigs in a number of different countries and gain invaluable experience. Our policy on advancement is to promote from within wherever possible so the potential for promotion is excellent.

Drilling Rig Crews
Usually, there are 4 crews assigned to each drilling rig with 2 crews working opposing 12 hour shifts for 14 consecutive days after which they have 14 days off. This rotating work cycle enables the rig to operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

A typical crew consists of a Driller, Derrickman, Lead Floorman (also called a Motorman), 2 Floormen and a Leasehand. Leasehand is the entry-level position and everyone new to the industry starts off as a Leasehand and with motivation effort and opportunity, promotion to higher positions in the crew is a real possibility.

Larger rigs or more complicated projects may have an additional Leasehand or a Trainee Driller assigned. The crew is responsible for operating the drilling equipment during their 12-hour shift. They also conduct general maintenance and housekeeping of the rig. In addition, each rig normally has a Mechanic and an Electrician on site at all times for maintenance purposes.

For Mechanics and Electricians go to (Current Vacancies - link) to find out what vacancies we have or to (Apply Here - link) to register your interest with Ensign. In addition to the drilling rig crews and maintenance personnel, there can also be a multitude of other people working on the rig site such as geologists, engineers, catering staff and various Oil Company representatives.
